2019’s Top Home Decor Trends

A new year is upon us! And—especially if you’ve been tuning into Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix—there’s never been a better time to give your home a good decor refresh. 2019 brings with it a host of fun ways to change up your space, from splashy color palettes to cozy nooks and bold patterns. We scoured the Internet for a handful of expert takes on what to keep your eyes peeled for in 2019.

A Return to Nature

“People are increasingly seeking connections from nature,” Chris von Eckartsberg and Hans Baldauf, co-founding principals at BCV Architecture + Interiors, told Real Simple. “We see a growing desire for lighter, airier spaces, and wood is a wonderful material to incorporate to achieve this.” Instead of high-shine or boldly stained wood finishes, opt for a more organic approach with the spotlight on natural wood grain and subdued hues.

Going (South)West

According to Etsy’s 2019 Trend Report, the moment for Southwestern style has arrived. “The first glimpse of southwestern styles started with cacti, but this year we’re fully embracing the look: Etsy sellers will be bringing back bolo ties, desert-inspired illustrations and bold, woven textiles for an all-out Southwestern resurgence.” Keep an eye out for earthy tones, geometric patterns and rich textiles to bring the trend into your home.

Investment Rugs

Designer Holly Hollingsworth Phillips advised readers at BHG to turn their attention to high-quality carpeting in 2019: “I think nice wool rugs should last you a lifetime but they can be an investment.” Whether you go for Persian, Turkishvintage or modern, you can’t go wrong with a high-end addition to your home.

Comfort Is Key

One thing that’s carried over from the previous year is the influence of hygge. With an increasingly uncertain world, people are craving the kind of emotional comfort we get from the Scandinavian-inspired trend. “They want this cocoon feeling,” NYC-based designer Brett Beldock told the Associated Press. “Our surroundings have to be really warm and comforting now … everything is crazy and we’re all up in the air.”

Coral Everything

We all know the influence wielded by the color gods at Pantone, and they’ve zeroed in on “Living Coral” as their chosen color of 2019. Expect to see plenty of this vivid hue in the coming year, on everything from walls to rugs, lamps to runners, decor accents to throw blankets.
